A bunch of poppies in red and soft pink: “When Poppies Bloom” lives on the contrast between saturated blooms and light outlined lines.

What the picture shows

The composition is gathered into a circle. Several red poppies with dark centres sit beside pale pink and white flowers with yellow stamens, while open petals and green leaves lie below. Part of the stems, buds and leaves is worked in a thin outline only, so the picture looks drawn and watercolour-light. The background is not stitched: the ecru canvas stays a warm ground that makes the reds especially juicy. The kit holds 37 colours, most of them shades of red and pink, which is what gives the petals their volume. The greens are restrained and never pull attention away.
