Embroidery hoops hold the fabric at an even tension, and that is what decides whether your stitches come out the same size and your bead rows stay level. The section covers plastic, tapestry and wooden hoops as well as a rectangular frame.

Which type to choose

TypeCharacterBest for
PlasticLight, screw-tightened, leaves no marksThe all-rounder and most common choice
TapestryDeeper ring, firmer gripDense fabric, long projects
WoodenNatural material, pleasant in the handStitching in the hands, small formats
FrameRectangular, fabric fixed all roundLarge formats, even tension across the whole area

Choosing the size

The ring should be larger than the area you are stitching now, so it never rests on finished rows. 15 cm is enough for miniatures, 20–25 cm suits mid-size work, and large pieces are better on a frame.

Questions and answers

Do I need a hoop for bead embroidery on canvas?

Up to about 200×200 mm, not necessarily: artist canvas holds its shape. From 300 mm upwards even tension is much easier to keep on a hoop or frame.

Does the ring leave marks?

On Aida it can, if the ring stays in one place for a long time. Move the hoop and do not leave the work stretched overnight.

Which hoop for cross stitch?

A 15–25 cm round hoop covers most projects. From 300 mm upwards a frame is more comfortable.

Can I wash the work while it is in the hoop?

No, take it out before washing.
