Description

“Velvet feelings” shows a dense bunch of peonies and roses on a dark background. It is a piece about the texture of petals and nothing else.

What the picture shows

The flowers fill almost the whole surface: a half-open crimson peony above, a cream-white rose in the centre, two more pink ones and a deep red one below. The petals are worked in many close shades — from nearly white to deep burgundy — with clear shadows in the depth of each bloom. The leaves are dark green with a grey bloom, and the stems are barely visible. The background is almost black, stitched in brown-grey, so the bouquet comes forward. Count 18 fabric gives the small stitch such detail needs, which is why the kit is rated high difficulty. The hardest part is the centres of the blooms: in the peony they are packed with tiny petals, in the rose they curl into a spiral. The edges of some petals have dried slightly and are marked in a darker thread, while the leaves show veins and small light highlights.
