Description

“The warmth of motherhood” — a mother holding her baby, worked in soft grey and beige with no bright colour at all.

What the picture shows

The woman leans towards the child and touches her cheek to its head; both have their eyes closed. The baby sleeps wrapped in light cloth, one small hand visible. Everything is built on half-tones: warm ivory, ash grey, smoke and almost black in the hair. The folds of the cloth and the shadows on the faces are made of smooth transitions, and most of the sixteen thread colours go into them. The background is not drawn but left as a soft blurred patch, so the figures seem wrapped in light. White count 18 canvas gives a small stitch and a gentle modelling of the faces. More than twenty shades are not needed here: the sixteen thread colours are arranged so that the move from light to shadow stays imperceptible.
