“The sun of Sicily” — a Mediterranean town above the water, a large yellow sun and a branch of oranges.

What the picture shows

The sun hangs almost in the centre — an even yellow disc without rays, ringed by a pale haze. Houses with terracotta roofs and narrow windows run down the slope on the right, dark cypresses behind them; blue mountains lie on the left and in the distance in several planes, from deep ultramarine to pale sky. Calm water with vertical reflections fills the bottom, and a branch of ripe oranges with glossy leaves comes into the foreground. Fifty-one thread colours across 151 m: the largest palette in this batch, and it is needed exactly for the mountains and the water. The reflections in the water are lighter than the houses themselves, so the lower half looks lighter than the upper. The oranges in the foreground are the largest, and the eye starts from them.
