Description

“The Night Watch” shows a raven perched on an old lantern among bare autumn branches. The piece is quiet and a little uneasy.

What the picture shows

The bird fills the upper half: its black plumage is stitched in blue, purple and grey shades, so it looks iridescent in the light; the beak is heavy and the eye pale. Below it stands a lantern with a warm yellow flame inside and a dark wrought-iron base. Thin leafless branches spread around, and a few last yellow leaves fall down. The background is a soft ochre haze on the coffee fabric, with no clear horizon line. There are 19 thread colours, and most of them go into the plumage. The lantern shows glass panes, a wire handle and warm light falling on the branch. The raven’s feathers are stitched in short overlapping rows, and a faint bluish sheen shows on the breast — that is what keeps it from being just a black patch.
