Description

“The long-awaited rendezvous” shows a pink bicycle with two baskets of roses standing by an old door. The scene is quiet, as if the owner had stepped away for a minute.

What the picture shows

The bicycle is turned slightly towards the viewer, its spokes and frame worked in a thin line, the saddle and handlebars dark. The front basket and the rear rack hold dense bunches of pink and cream roses with green leaves. Behind them is the wall of an old house: rough plaster, wooden shutters, a blank door and a wrought-iron lantern at the top right. The cobblestones below are laid in small stitches in different shades of grey and ochre. The colours are soft and faded — an effect helped by the white fabric, which is left as background in places. The roses in the baskets are the most densely stitched: each bloom shows a curled heart and several petals bent back. Small fallen petals lie on the cobbles by the wheels, and a faint shadow of the bicycle on the wall to the right anchors it in space.
