Description

“The glare of the sun's rays” — an orange butterfly with black wing edges on patches of spilled paint.

What the picture shows

The butterfly spreads its wings across almost the full width. The upper wings are black along the outer edge with white spots, and filled inside with warm orange and gold crossed by dark veins; the lower wings are lighter, with elongated tips. The body is dense black, the antennae thin. The background is made of watercolour patches — pink, lilac, blue and yellow — which in places run down in long drips and scatter as splashes. There are no outlines: the butterfly holds together by the sharpness of its own drawing. Twenty-eight thread colours across 99 m. The fabric at the corners is left plain. The background patches run under the wings, so the butterfly seems immersed in the paint rather than laid on top of it. The upper wings are broader than the lower ones, so the silhouette comes out triangular.
