“The color of the sun” — a large sunflower beside blue blooms, worked with runs and splashes of colour.

What the picture shows

The sunflower is seen from the front: petals from lemon to deep gold, with a brown-ochre heart drawn in fine dots. Blue blooms crowd it from the right and above, built from round buds like grape hyacinths, in shades from sky blue to ink. The green leaves are given as brushstrokes with no firm edge. Blue runs drip from the flower below and splashes fly out around it — the device that keeps the whole composition in a watercolour manner. Twenty-eight thread colours across 141 m, small stitch on count 18 canvas. The fabric outside the flower is left plain. Blue and yellow nowhere mix into green: they meet, but each colour stays clean. The sunflower petals differ in length, and that makes the ring of the flower look alive.
