Description

“Tea party by the window” — an open window looking onto an autumn lake, with books, flowers and a cup of tea around it.

What the picture shows

The composition is set into a circle. The window leaves are opened inwards, the curtains drawn back, and through the opening you see water, a house on the far shore and trees in yellow and red. Shelves of books stand on either side, the volumes set loosely and at different angles; on the sill are a jug of small blue and white flowers and a cup with a saucer. An open book lies below with a lilac flower peeping from under it. Thirty-seven thread colours across 112 m and the small stitch of count 18 canvas hold all that detail. The fabric outside the circle is left plain. The books on the shelves differ in colour and height, and they are what makes the interior feel lived in. The curtains are worked in the palest thread and frame the view on both sides.
