Description

“Swans of love” shows two swans, one white and one black, bending their necks towards each other. The design rests on a simple contrast of two silhouettes.

What the picture shows

The birds stand side by side at full height: the white swan’s plumage is stitched in ivory, cream and pale grey, its beak orange with a black base. The black swan stands behind, its neck arching over the white one, its feathers taken in graphite and deep blue, its beak red. Thin decorative curls worked in a single light colour run around them, marking the space without filling it. The coffee fabric is left as background, and it is what makes the composition warm rather than harsh. There are 21 thread colours. You can see how the feathers lie in rows along the curve of the necks, growing finer near the head. The white swan has a pale grey gradation on the wing, while the black one has a thin light line along the feather edges that separates it from the background.
