Description

“Sunny spring” — spring flowers in gold hexagons: some open in full colour, some left as a light outline.

What the picture shows

The composition is held together by several hexagonal frames drawn with fine metallic thread. Inside them are open flowers with long narrow petals, stitched in dense yellow, ochre and warm orange, with gold beads in the centres. Outside the frames the same flowers and narcissi are only outlined in white, like a pencil sketch, while stems and thin leaves run in muted green. That contrast between filled and drawn shapes is the main device of the design. The space around the hexagons stays open black canvas — a night ground on which the yellow glows. Small buds on thin stems are scattered along the edges and balance the heavy yellow patches inside the frames. Nine thread colours: most of them are gradations of yellow and ochre, with only two greens.
