Description

“Summer wreath” — a wreath of poppies, daisies and cornflowers with butterflies and ladybirds in it.

What the picture shows

The ring is made of wild flowers: large red poppies with black centres, white daisies, blue cornflowers, small yellow blooms and golden wheat ears. Green leaves of various shapes are woven between them, and two butterflies — one blue, one yellow — and several red ladybirds sit on the petals. The drawing is watercolour-like, with soft edges and light splashes of colour outside the wreath. Forty-two thread colours give gentle transitions inside each flower. The fabric inside the ring is left plain, so the wreath reads easily. The flowers are deliberately of different sizes: the large poppies set the rhythm and the small blooms fill the gaps between them. The wheat ears deliberately reach beyond the ring and break it open.
