“Strawberry bouquet” — a strawberry plant in a white pot on a stack of old books — warm and homely.

What the picture shows

The plant spreads wide: carved leaves in every shade of green, small white flowers with yellow centres and dozens of red berries at different stages of ripeness, from pale pink to almost cherry. The pot is white and textured, with soft grey shadows down its sides. Below it lie two books in dark red and brown bindings and a white napkin with a lace edge hanging over the side. The background is pale and blurred, so all the attention stays on the plant. Thirty-six thread colours and the small stitch of count 18 canvas give botanical precision. The berries sit at different depths: those in front are worked in detail, those behind are only indicated by colour. The fabric outside the plant is left plain, and that makes the bush look three-dimensional.
