What the picture shows

Deep in the view stands a low white house with a tiled roof, dark cypresses and rounded crowns beside it, blue hills and a high pale sky behind. The foreground is filled with even rows of lavender, from lilac to almost violet, with ochre paths between them. The colours are soft and hazy, as in summer heat; thirty-one thread shades go mostly into the transitions in the field and the sky. Since the work is set into a shaped frame, the composition is arranged to fit a leaf outline, with edges deliberately softened. The rows of lavender run diagonally and narrow into the distance, so a small piece still holds the feeling of a wide field. The sky takes only a narrow strip at the top; everything else is given to the field.
