Description

“Provance's aroma” is lavender in a white jug, a lemon and a linen sachet on a plank table. A classic Provence still life.

What the picture shows

The jug stands at the centre with lavender bursting out of it — hundreds of small florets from pale lilac to deep purple on grey-green stems. A second, smaller pot of lavender with a label sits lower on the left. In the foreground lie a linen sachet tied with twine and a bright yellow lemon with a leaf. The table is planked in a warm greyish brown, the wall behind it light and blurred. The stitching is solid and the canvas is fully covered. The lavender heads are worked in vertical rows of small stitches, which makes the bunch look loose and airy. The lemon and the sachet stand in the foreground and set the scale for the whole scene.
