“Poppies” — red poppies on black framed by a pale blackwork lattice.

What the picture shows

Five open poppies with dark centres stand in a row, their petals moving from bright red to deep wine with black veins. The stems are thin and curved in yellow-green, with narrow leaves and closed buds nodding between them. Around the flowers the ground is filled with a pale diamond lattice of fine pattern that occupies the top and bottom of the piece and holds the composition in a frame. Metallic thread gives the lattice a cold sheen. Outside the lattice and the flowers the ground stays open black canvas, so the red looks especially dense. The lattice is worked in the palest thread and deliberately does not compete with the poppies — it only holds the field. Fourteen thread colours across 46 m of thread.
