Description

“Poppies” shows an armful of poppies laid on a white cloth at the edge of a carved table.

What the picture shows

The flowers differ in colour: bright red with black centres in front, pink and crimson with dark stamens on the left, violet and smaller red ones behind. Round green seed pods and cut leaves show between them. The cloth is pale and folded, and the edge of the table below is finished with a carved scroll. A pale pink jug stands in the upper right. The upper part of the work is left as black canvas — it is against this ground that the flowers glow most.
