Description

“Pion” — a large crimson flower above a golden ornamental medallion on black canvas.

What the picture shows

The flower is wide open; its petals move from deep crimson at the edges to pale pink and almost white in the middle, with fine shading across each petal. Below it sits a symmetrical ornamental shape, something between a shield and a pendant: scrolls, curved horns, teardrop details and a sharp tip pointing down. It is worked in restrained beige and ochre tones and outlined with metallic thread in two colours, so the ornament supports the flower instead of competing with it. The kit has only six colours, and the effect rests on that economy. The ground is not stitched, so the drawing seems to hang in the dark and the open black canvas becomes part of the design. Thin gold lines join the flower to the ornament, so the two parts read as one. The petals are shaded gradually towards the middle, which is the most interesting part of the stitching.
