Description

“One in a canoe” — a view from above of a wooden canoe among water lilies — one person alone on dark water.

What the picture shows

The composition is built from above, as if from a height. A pale wooden canoe with cross benches lies in the centre, a figure in dark clothes sitting in it with a paddle. The water is dark green and blue, drawn with long wavy current lines through which fish silhouettes show. Round lily pads in every shade of green float on either side of the boat, with pink and white water-lily flowers among them. Forty thread colours go mostly into the water: its transitions are what create the sense of depth. The canvas is stitched densely here: the water covers almost the whole field and very little plain fabric remains. The figure is small compared with the boat and the water, and the whole mood of the piece rests on that contrast. The boat is turned slightly, so both sides show.
