“Once upon a time...” — an open book from which a gothic window, a castle and flowers grow.

What the picture shows

The book lies at the bottom: a thick block of pages with a gilt edge, a dark binding, a few leaves lifted by the wind. A pointed window with carved tracery rises straight from the pages, and through it you see the blue and violet towers of a castle and clouds. Flowers grow thickly on either side of the window — pink roses, white and blue bells, small yellow blooms — caught below by a wave of green leaves. Drops run down from the book and small dots scatter, as if the story were spilling onto the table. Thirty-seven thread colours across 132 m. The fabric at the edges is left plain. The pages of the book are drawn as separate lines, which makes the block look thick and heavy. The flowers spill beyond the window and seem to grow straight out of the paper.
