Description

“Nirvana” shows a stone head of Buddha with closed eyes and open lotus flowers beside it. The mood is focused and quiet.

What the picture shows

The face is shown in profile with a slight turn, stitched in warm greys and beiges so that the texture of stone reads clearly; a small red dot sits on the forehead. Two large blooms grow on the left: an orange-red one above and a blue-white one below, both with broad green leaves. Vertical black drips run behind the composition, as if paint had flowed down the fabric, along with a few turquoise strokes. The white fabric is left as background, so the dark bands work as a graphic accent. The 30 thread colours are needed mostly for the gradations on the face. The stone is conveyed through small light and dark specks: unevenness shows on the cheek and chin, the ear is elongated, the eyelids heavy. The lotus petals are stitched from deep orange at the base to almost white at the tips, and the leaves have clear lengthwise veins.
