Description

“Night moth” — a night moth at the centre of a symmetrical ornament, beneath a crescent moon and a white star-stone.

What the picture shows

The moth spreads its wings across almost the whole width of the piece: the wings are silver-grey with a fine pattern of veins and a pale border, the body is ochre and gold. Above it sits a crescent with three small moon phases on either side, and at the very top a light round shape like a stone. Below, the composition narrows into a sharp ornamental triangle of scrolls and feathers outlined in gold metallic thread, with small beads scattered along the contour like stars. All this graphic work lies directly on the black canvas: the ground is not stitched, so the darkness around the moth stays real. Eleven thread colours are split between the grey range of the wings and the warm gold of the ornament, so the piece looks restrained despite the intricate drawing. The symmetry is complete — the left half mirrors the right.
