Description

“Motley grass” is a bee on honeycomb, with white daisies growing between the cells. A simple idea worked very densely.

What the picture shows

The bee sits in the lower third, head turned to the left: a yellow and black striped abdomen, translucent bluish wings with visible veins, fine legs. The honeycomb serves as the ground — dozens of six-sided cells filled with honey, from pale yellow to amber, each with its own shadow. Stems with white daisies and a few small pink and lilac flowers grow up through the cells. Towards the edges the composition dissolves into plain cloth. The motif is round in shape, with no firm border. Beads in three colours pick out individual cells and flower centres. The cells are not identical: the nearer ones are drawn sharply, while the farther ones blur and dissolve into the ground.
