Description

“Misty evening” shows a large beetle against dark blue foliage and pink flowers. The design is decorative, with a texture closer to enamel than to nature.

What the picture shows

The beetle sits in the centre, facing the viewer: its wing cases shift from turquoise to purple, its thorax is golden ochre, and its antennae are long and thin. Three large blooms in a rich pink-crimson tone with dark centres open to the right and above. The background is deep blue, crossed by outlined leaves worked in light lines — they are what create the misty effect. Small golden specks are stitched with metallic thread. The fabric is stitched completely, so the depth of the background rests on the thread rather than on the colour of the fabric. The beetle’s wing cases are divided by a clear line along which the main colour shift runs; the legs are thin, with small joints. The flowers around have tightly packed petals with dark veins, and the outlined leaves on the background are worked in a single light colour with no fill.
