What the picture shows

The instrument lies diagonally and fills the upper half of the design: a rounded body the colour of warm honey with visible wood grain, a dark neck, a row of strings and a carved rosette. A blue and yellow ribbon is thrown across it and winds down in soft folds. A bouquet supports the instrument from below: large red poppies with black centres, a sunflower with a brown heart, white daisies, blue cornflowers and golden wheat ears. A blue butterfly flies above the body. Twenty-four thread colours carry both the warm range of the wood and the clear colours of the flowers. The fabric outside the subject is left unstitched, so the composition looks light despite its size. The strings are worked as separate pale stitches over the finished body, and that is the finest part of the design.
