Description

“Love in heaven” — a heart-shaped hot-air balloon rising over a night city in a pink and violet sky.

What the picture shows

The balloon is pale, almost white, with fine seam lines and a woven basket below; it hangs in the centre of the design and reads at once as a heart. The sky around it is a gradient from lilac and crimson to deep violet, with curls of cloud and small beaded stars. Dark leafless branches cut across the top of the frame, and a black city silhouette with rows of lit windows runs along the bottom. Twenty-six thread colours work on the gradient in the sky, while the branches and the city are almost bare canvas, so the silhouettes stay sharp. The windows in the houses are marked with small warm dots, the only things that compete with the sky for attention. The clouds are given as broad strokes without outlines, which makes the sky feel in motion.
