Description

“Little lioness” is a lion cub with closed eyes and an open mouth among autumn leaves. A warm russet palette.

What the picture shows

The cub sits facing forward with its head thrown back: russet fur shading through coral and ochre, a pale muzzle, a pink tongue and small visible fangs. Its paws with soft pads are folded in front. Dry leaves, burgundy twigs and peach flowers scatter around the head and under the paws, forming an irregular circle. The background is almost white with light splashes. The whole piece is counted cross stitch; the cloth is covered, and the softness comes from a palette of forty-one shades. The mouth is wide open, and that is what makes the portrait lively despite the general softness of the drawing.
