Description

“Killer whales” — three killer whales in motion against a red fan of sunlight and white spray.

What the picture shows

The whales swim diagonally one behind another: black backs, white patches by the eyes and on the belly, fins spread. Inside the silhouettes runs a golden ornament of scrolls and waves, so the animals look carved rather than painted. A half-circle of red and orange rays rises behind them like a sun, and the space around is scattered with white dots of spray and foam. Metallic thread in two colours outlines the shapes and the waves. The piece is horizontal, 300×200 mm, and the movement runs from left to right. The black ground is not stitched — the open canvas stands for the depth of the water, and the white spray looks sharp against it. The three silhouettes are placed so that the eye moves from the lowest whale to the highest and stops at the red sun. Fifteen thread colours: black, white, several greys and a warm red-orange group.
