“Keeper of the Twilight” — a portrait of a long-haired cat looking straight at the viewer with amber eyes.

What the picture shows

The cat takes up almost the whole field: thick long fur running from nearly white on the chest to dark brown along the back, with ash and silver strands. The fur is made of short stitches in changing directions, so you can see how it falls in waves and parts at the tips. The face is lighter, the whiskers long and thin, the nose pink-grey, and the large round amber eyes with black pupils hold the attention. The background is pale, slightly green-grey, with no detail. Twenty-five thread colours and the small stitch of count 18 canvas give realistic fur. The background is stitched along with the cat, in soft light shades, so the piece is dense across its whole area. The move from the dark back to the pale chest takes the most attention — that is where most of the shades are concentrated.
