Description

“Japan-4” shows a red torii gate and a stone lantern under a branch of sakura. The smallest of the Japanese four.

What the picture shows

Small red torii gates with two crossbars stand at the centre, and to their right a tiered stone lantern, also red, with a wide roof on a narrow post. A dark root base worked in silvery strokes lies below. A thin branch with small sakura blossoms — pink, crimson, quite pale in places — runs across the whole format from the top edge. Seven colours, among them metallic thread. The black canvas is left unstitched: it holds the whole composition on contrast. The sakura branch enters from the top and runs diagonally, balancing the gate below. The lantern stands slightly lower than the gate, so the composition tilts gently to the right.
