Description

“Japan-2” shows a cliff, a red pavilion with a small bridge and a branch of sakura in bloom. The second Japanese miniature.

What the picture shows

A sharp grey-silver cliff rises on the left, worked in short strokes, with water marked by a few lines beneath it. A small pavilion with a curved red roof on tall piles stands at the centre, a plank bridge running to the right from it. A dark branch with dense pink-red sakura blossom crosses the whole format on the right. Six colours, among them metallic thread, give the cliff a cool sheen. The black cloth between the elements is left unstitched and stays as the ground. The cliff and the pavilion sit on different planes, so this small miniature carries a real sense of depth. The sakura blossoms are tiny, a few stitches each, and there are more than a hundred of them.
