Description

“Irises” — a bouquet of bearded irises in lilac and yellow, stitched with near-botanical accuracy.

What the picture shows

Five open flowers stand at different heights, with several buds still closed on straight stems. The upper petals are pale lilac-blue, the lower ones darker with violet veining, and each carries an orange velvety beard down the middle. The leaves are long and sword-shaped, grey-green with a blue bloom; dry grass shows at the base. Forty-eight thread colours go into the finest transitions inside the petals, and they are what makes the flower look alive. The background is left as plain fabric, so the bouquet seems to step out of the paper. The darkest violet veins are laid over the pale petals last, which is what gives the flower its volume. The fabric around the bouquet is left plain. The buds at the tops of the stems stay almost monochrome, so they do not draw attention from the open flowers.
