Description

“Indestructible” — a map of Ukraine assembled from patches of embroidery ornament above golden wheat.

What the picture shows

The outline of the country is made of dozens of rectangular patches, each carrying its own pattern: red-and-black diamonds, white openwork, blue eight-petalled stars, ochre columns. The patches differ in size and tone, so the map looks like a sewn cloth rather than a solid shape. Thin wheat ears rise along the whole lower edge, worked in gold metallic thread — the lightest and brightest element in the piece. Ten thread colours across 144 m: a short palette, with the effect resting on the density of the ornament. The black canvas stays open and works as the ground. No patch repeats its neighbour, so the stitching needs care and constant checking against the pattern. There are not many wheat ears and they never close into a solid band; the ground shows between them.
