Description

“In the rays of the sunset” is Eastern-style line art: a red sun, two cranes, a gnarled pine and a boat on the water.

What the picture shows

The composition is built like a scroll: a flat red sun hangs at the upper left — the only bright patch in the piece. To its right a crooked pine branch with tufts of needles runs across the whole format, worked in fine black strokes. Two cranes fly to the left with outstretched necks and legs. A ridge of mountains is marked below by a thin line, and a long boat with a reed canopy and a boatman with a pole stands on the water. There are only fifteen colours, most of them shades of black and grey. The background stays light and almost empty. The pine needles are worked in tufts of a few stitches rather than solidly, so the branch looks transparent.
