Description

“In mind” — two birds on crossed branches, stitched pale on black among small flowers.

What the picture shows

The birds sit one above the other, both in profile, with long beaks and pointed tails. Their plumage is made not as a patch but as rows of small scales and strokes in white, cream and ash grey, so the silhouette looks like lace from a distance. The branches cross at an angle and hold the composition together, and narrow flowers with pink petal tips open along them — the only warm colour in the piece. Sixteen thread colours across 78 m, and nearly all of them are pale. The black canvas stays open, and the contrast of pale drawing against dark ground is what carries the whole design. The flowers are gathered nearer the centre while the ends of the branches stay bare, so the composition is never overloaded. The birds’ tails are long and pointed and reach beyond the branches.
