Description

“Grenades” — a wreath of ripe pomegranates on black: deep red, fresh green and gold sparks of metallic thread.

What the picture shows

The fruit is arranged in a closed circle. Some pomegranates are whole, with an openwork ornament inside; others are cut open so the small seeds show. Long leaves run between them, from bright green to dark green, curved so the circle looks alive rather than drafted. The red is taken in several tones, from cherry in the shade to almost orange where the light falls. Metallic thread in two colours outlines the shapes and draws thin tendrils and dots, while PRECIOSA #10 beads pick out single seeds. The ground between the fruit is left unstitched: the open black canvas works as a deep, even background on which the reds and greens read cleanly. The ring is closed, so the design has no top or bottom and holds together whichever way it hangs.
