Description

“Graceful beauty” shows a single large peony seen almost close up. The whole piece is about one flower opening.

What the picture shows

The bloom takes up almost the entire surface: the outer petals are pale pink, the colour thickens to crimson towards the middle, and yellow stamens show deep inside. The petals are laid in layers, each with its own shadow and light edge — this is what creates the sense of volume. A green stem with two leaves comes out below, and one more petal leans aside. The background is taken in soft greyish-green strokes and dissolves into the white fabric. Count 18 fabric and 31 thread colours are needed here for very smooth gradations inside the flower. Closer to the centre the petals become smaller and denser, and their edges are noticeably wavy. Two of the lower petals show light creases, as if the bloom had opened a little the day before. The leaves below have clear teeth and a thin pale rim.
