Description

“Golden elephant” is an elephant's head with painted ears and trunk, stitched in gold and turquoise on black cloth.

What the picture shows

The elephant is shown strictly frontally and symmetrically. Its ears spread to the full width and are covered with ornament: concentric arcs, drops and small flowers in turquoise, pink and gold. A jewelled band decorates the forehead, and a narrow pattern runs down between the eyes. The trunk hangs and curls up at the tip, banded with cross ornament, with short tusks showing on either side. There are only sixteen colours but 188 metres of floss: the design is very dense. The black canvas between the elements stays unstitched and works as the ground. The ornament on the left and right ears is mirrored, so the chart need only be read once and then repeated in reverse. The tusks are lighter than anything else and step forward out of the dark.
