Description

“Garden peonies” shows a bank of peonies in a garden by the water, worked on black canvas.

What the picture shows

The lower half of the piece is taken up by flowers: pink, lilac, white and crimson peonies with heavy heads and dark green leaves, planted in a continuous band. Behind them lie a strip of mown lawn and a path, then green trees and bushes. A thick trunk with branches stands on the right and another branch hangs into the upper left corner. Water glints between the trees and the sky is a pale lilac-blue. The background is stitched throughout, so none of the black canvas shows in the finished piece.
