Description

“Friend” is a portrait of a golden retriever with its tongue out, painted as if with a wet brush.

What the picture shows

The head takes the centre and faces the viewer directly: a broad forehead, dark attentive eyes, a black nose, hanging ears with long wavy hair, a pink tongue. The fur is worked in every shade of red — cream on the muzzle, copper and terracotta on the ears — with blue and lilac shadows. The outline is deliberately loose: the hair at the edges breaks into separate stitches, and splashes of red, blue and raspberry fly around it. The background is white and empty. Forty colours over 132 metres of floss make a medium project with many close tones. The eyes and nose are the only sharp details; the rest of the portrait is built on soft, blurred transitions.
