Description

“Flower wind-2” is a narrow feather sprouting flowers on black cloth. The second half of the pair with “Flower wind-1”.

What the picture shows

The feather stands almost upright, leaning slightly to the right. Its barbs are worked in light olive and gold stitches that part in places to let the black canvas show through. At the top, where the feather is widest, a deep burgundy flower with pointed petals opens beside two cream blossoms with russet centres and a few small buds. Lower down the shaft breaks into separate filaments that fall as if carried by wind. The palette is warm and muted: burgundy, olive, gold, cream. There are only four colours, so the whole effect rests on the drawing rather than on the range of shades. The black cloth is left unstitched and works as the ground.

At 190×250 mm and sixty-two metres of floss this is a project for a few evenings, usually hung next to its companion piece or the “Feather-1” design. It is better finished without glass so the metallic thread keeps its sheen. The frame is not part of the kit and is chosen separately to suit the room.
