Description

“First autumn” is a red fox cub lying in a heap of fallen leaves with its paws tucked in. A warm autumn palette.

What the picture shows

The cub fills the lower two thirds: fluffy red fur with a white chest and white tail tip, dark paws, pointed ears rimmed in black, half-closed eyes and a black nose. The tail wraps around the body in a half circle. Leaves lie densely around it — maple, oak, birch — in ochre, orange, terracotta and yellow, with a few falling from above. The background is light and almost colourless, so the whole warm range gathers at the centre. Thirty-three shades over 113 metres of floss give soft transitions in the fur. The tail tip and the chest are the lightest areas, and they lead the eye straight to the face.
