Description

“Field flowers” — a narrow upright band of wild flowers: poppies, daisies and wheat from top to bottom.

What the picture shows

The composition is built as a ribbon: several red poppies with dark centres and white daisies with yellow hearts at the top, then thin stems, tendrils and golden wheat ears running down, and another group of poppies with green leaves closing the design at the bottom. The red is taken in several tones, from bright to almost dark cherry in the shade, and the wheat is ochre with fine awns. Thirty thread colours and the small stitch of count 18 canvas. The background stays plain, so the band looks light. The flowers are grouped at the ends and the middle is deliberately sparse, so the tall format never looks overloaded. The fabric is left plain along the whole length.
