Description

“Evening swim” shows a mallard drifting on still water among reeds. The sun is already low, and everything around is soaked in warm light.

What the picture shows

The drake sits in the lower third, turned to the left: a green head with a metallic sheen, a white collar, a brown breast and grey-beige flanks. A blurred reflection lies in the water beneath him. Reed stems with dark heads and long narrow leaves rise on both sides, several of them crossing the composition diagonally. The water is stitched in horizontal rows of pale grey, beige and blue, with a yellow circle of sun and its path in the centre. The composition has soft rounded edges, beyond which the white fabric is left bare. The drake’s head is stitched with shifts from emerald to almost black, and a clear white line runs along the edge of the collar. The reeds have dark velvety heads and long leaves bending under their own weight; rings from the bird’s movement show on the water.
