Cross Stitch Kit "Eastern Express"
Description
“Eastern Express” shows an old steam locomotive rolling onto a bridge with a long trail of smoke behind it. The design is painted in a watercolour manner, with soft edges and colours flowing into one another.
What the picture shows
In the centre is a black engine with a red carriage behind it: copper gleams on the boiler, a lamp glows above the buffers. The steel bridge runs diagonally and breaks off at the top right, with a grey-green haze underneath. The sky is laid in broad grey-blue patches, and the smoke takes up almost half of the picture. The palette is restrained — graphite, rust, muted red, cold turquoise. The background here is painterly rather than ornamental, so it is stitched along with the subject: 31 thread colours give smooth transitions from the dark bottom to the light top. The finest work falls on the running gear: the wheels, rods and handrails are drawn in thin dark lines that need to be laid carefully, because every extra stitch shows against the light background. The rails below gradually disappear into the mist.
