Description

“Cozy” — a folk sampler in a single colour: a house, birds and stars gathered in a circle.

What the picture shows

The whole piece is stitched in red on white — only four thread colours, all of them shades of red. A stylised house stands in the centre, with a tall roof, a star cross on the gable and fine patterning over the walls. Birds with raised tails sit on either side, and below them run rows of diamonds, eight-petalled stars and small waves. A wreath of tiny leaves closes the composition in a ring. The drawing is built on symmetry and repetition, so counting is easy and a mistake shows at once. The fabric inside the ornament is left plain. Dots and short dashes between the larger motifs fill the field evenly, so the ring does not fall apart. The house stands exactly at the centre, and the ornament spreads from it in every direction.
