“Colors of the night” — large roses in moonlight: cold lilac, blue and silver on dark canvas.

What the picture shows

The flowers open across almost the full width of the piece. The petals are stitched in blue, lilac and steel with white highlights along the edges, and small drops of dew on them are picked out with silver metallic thread. The leaves are dark, with a cold blue undertone and clear veining. Behind the flowers a large moon rises — a pale disc with a soft halo — and silver dots fall between the petals. Twenty-one thread colours across 139 m of thread: what matters here is density and transition rather than the number of shades. The dark blue canvas stays open between the flowers — it stands for the night sky. The dew on the petals is made of separate light stitches laid over the finished colour, so it only shows at certain angles.
