Description

“Cold touch” — peonies in a single grey — a piece with no colour at all.

What the picture shows

Three large flowers open one above another, with smaller buds and broad serrated leaves around them. The whole palette is gradations of grey: from nearly black deep in the petals to pale pearl at the edges and pure white in the highlights. Twenty-two thread colours are arranged so that the step between neighbouring tones is almost invisible, and that is what carries the volume. The veins in the leaves and the stamens in the centres are drawn with separate dark stitches. The work recalls a pencil drawing or an old engraving. The fabric behind the bouquet is left plain. The ground under the flowers is slightly darker than the petals, so the bouquet does not merge with the fabric.
