Description

“Calyptra” — a large Calyptra moth with open wings against a red geometric ornament.

What the picture shows

The wings are spread symmetrically and take up the full width of the design. They are stitched in beige, ochre and dark brown with a fine scaled pattern and a pale border; the body is deep brown with thin antennae. Behind the moth sits a red figure of triangular rays and diamonds, like stained glass or a second pair of wings, and small red and gold dots fall from it like sparks. Metallic thread in two colours outlines the ornament and the wing veins. The ground is not stitched, and the black canvas around the ornament works as an empty dark field. The red figure behind the moth is built from even triangles, so the geometry contrasts clearly with the soft drawing of the wings. Thirteen thread colours: a beige-and-brown group for the moth and three reds for the ornament.
